Errata and addenda to 'Brave New Europe?'

Chapter 6  Change The European Communities Act to The European Communities Bill which was passed at the beginning of 1973 to become the European Communities Act

chapter 10  It is quite difficult to express in short simple sentences due to the deliberately convoluted procedures of the EU.

The elected European Parliament has virtually no political authority of any significance. They cannot create, amend or repeal any Directive or law. All draft EU Directives (that eventually become the laws of the EU and hence of the UK) are generated by internal European Commission committees. MEPs are excluded from these committees. The deliberations are confidential until the draft is presented to the European Parliament. There the elected MEPs are very strictly limited in asking questions of it, debating it and any amendments proposed are subject to approval of the unelected European Commission. The MEPs are only permitted to speak for one or perhaps two minutes but often exploit this to ask questions or propose amendments. Hans-Gert Pottering, the president of the parliament, also has the authority to prohibit any MEP speaking if, in his opinion, that MEP is likely to disrupt the smooth ratification of any Directive. However, the unelected European Commission (the 'Higher Authority') always has the final say and as such the elected European Parliament is little more that a rubber stamp. This is root cause of the closing of our local Post Offices, the lunatic situation with dust bin collections and very many of the other problems we have in our society now.

Errata and Additions to pamphlet 'The European Union Project'  (see www.theeuroprobe.org 2007-4)

- whatever you do errata creeps in and new bits of info emerge. - so far the errors found are only deckchairs not icebergs. More info keeps turning up as well.

Comments - very many supportive letters have been received and among them:

(although on the very left wing of the Labour Party Mr Benn is a passionate democrat. One of his most telling observations of the current senior members of the Labour government is ..."It's very interesting to me that some ex-communists in the Labour party have been able to shift from Stalin to Blair and it hasn't been much of a shift... the shift from Stalin to Blair is a minor adjustment."  Wikipedia)

ADD to   Chapter 5.     5.13     An organisation of local informers to spy and report on their neighbours and citizens.

ADD to   Chapter 7.    ..............quoting him directly (add) speaking at the UN in 1952.

ERROR    Chapter 8 - It is a firmly held belief of very many that we had a referendum to join the EEC (now the EU) - it was, however, only a vague promise that did not happen. We were also supplied with a little bit of duff gen. here and I miss-read a hand written script where a 5 looked like a 2. This was completely missed by several proof readers (20+) so we are a bit red faced with this one. It was a referendum to stay in the EEC after parliament had already taken us in (in both senses). Interesting note - of the many thousands who have read this pamphlet only 8 have commented on this error. The Labour Party, Tory Party and Lib Dems have all had a copy and they have failed to comment on this as well.

Amendment to chapter 8          In (remove - the 1972 referendum) 1973 parliament, by a very narrow margin, just voted to join the European Economic Community (the EEC) – described as a free trade ‘Common Market’. Whatever happened to it? ... Heath knew that a referendum would be lost if the people of the UK were ever to become aware of the true nature of what they were voting for. (add - Heath felt the risk of a 'NO' far too great so he refused to allow a referendum but Labour promised one in their 1974 manifesto). Heath blatantly lied to us – ref. 2006-53 – and he knew perfectly well at the time that he was lying.

Why are the 'Political Elite' so keen for the UK to be taken over by the EU? A possible major reason is that under the EU electoral process individual MEPs do not have to be accountable to the electorate, only to their party.

You have to understand the difference between the UK system and the EU system.

Under British democracy any hopeful MP has to face the electorate and justify himself to them to get elected. The Political Elite and the Civil Service executives are 'servants of the people'. When the EU Agenda is fully implemented they will become 'Masters of the people'. Such a delicious prospect is irresistible.

In the EU the potential MEPs are pre-selected by their party before the election (the voters could well not even know their names). The vote is for the party, not the MEP, and depending on the number of votes cast for that party the successful MEPs are taken from the top of the pre-selected list. The MEPs are effectively appointed not elected and thus can have their utopian dream of power and control without having to personally justify themselves to the voters. They will be able to avoid putting themselves through, as one ‘A Lister’ put it at a recent By-election, “… the sordid and degrading business of having to grovel to the stupid, thick public just to get elected..." This will be certainly true of the established 'Elite' (who will always go to the top of the List) and is a quite tantalising promise held out to A Listers and backbenchers (hopeful A Listers) to keep them compliant. There will be no place for an individual or a maverick - only trusted party members and apparatchiks. For the unelected officials it will be easier for them to be even more remote from the people they are supposed to serve and even less responsible and accountable for their actions.

‘A Listing’ by the UK parties is a move towards the EU system of appointed MPs. An ‘A Lister’ is someone pre-selected by the political party HQ to have priority over any locally preferred candidate and to be fast tracked up through the political system. It is someone who ‘the party’ feel will be thoroughly subservient to the party and so be a trusted member to stay ‘on message’ in exchange for the mega-perks of being in the party system. The actual party they are committed to often seems of no consequence. They could quite easily be a Tory A Lister or a New Labour A Lister. The possibility of someone of an independent mind getting into parliament is thus prevented.

ADD to   Chapter 19    Look out for a strategy (with low profile government encouragement) to systematically try to convince us that our jury system is inherently flawed and we must, therefore, move to the EU system as the only possible way to bring about proper justice.

ADD  to  Chapter 20    see also 2007-30 on how EU Article 308 is being used to circumvent the democratic UK parliament.

ADD to   Chapter 21    see 2007-10        also add  There is also a plan for Tax Inspectors to demand complete personal data about you, from your political opinions to whether you are a vegetarian to where you shop, to assess you tax liability. 2007-18.    also add  Our government is setting up an embryonic body of local informers to secretly spy on local citizens and neighbours to report petty and minor transgressions.  2007-18. At the moment it is only to catch anyone smoking in proscribed areas but the potential for this group of busybodies is to expand its remit to include almost anything it wishes.
