Galileo System confirmed for military purposes
March 3rd, 2009

The European Parliament confirmed that the Galileo Satellite System
will be used for military and security purposes, to enhance their
communication capabilities. This applied to satellite-based
intelligence and warning equipment with air vehicles, helicopters and
tele-comunication equipments, also with air and sea transport.

This a system that will interoperable with GPS and Glonas (the two
other satellite navigation systems).

The idea is that a user take a position with the same receiver from
any of the satellites in any combination, delivering real-time
positioning, which is unprecedented for a publicly available system.

This system will guarantee availability to this service under extreme
circumstances, that will make it suitable for applications were safety
is crucial, such as running trains, guiding cars and landing aircraft.

The first experimental satellite, part of the Galileo System Test Bed
(GSTB) was launched in 2005. The objective is to characterize the
critical technologies, which are already under development.

This consists of 30 satellites (27 operational + 3 active spares)
positioned in three circular Medium Earth Orbit planes at 23 222 km
altitude above the Earth.

The Galileo System will have vastly superior technology to the US
counterpart.  (only to current system but the US is upgrading their free

system but you will have to pay a lot to use Galileo)
