How Free Is Our Press?

We are frequently told that the freedom of the press is to be compromised by any reform of press regulation. It is also regularly asserted that the press in the UK is a free one. But not everyone subscribes to this point of view, and the people at Reporters Without Borders, in compiling their 2014 Press Freedom Index, have devised a methodology that does not show our press in the best light.

Indeed, the UK has slipped down this year’s listing, from number 30 last year to 33 this time. So who is at the top of the pile? As for the last two years, Finland occupies first place, and the Netherlands and Norway in second and third. There is a preponderance of EU member states and other European countries in the top places, although New Zealand (9) and Iceland (8) are in there too.

So where is the United States? Regrettably, it has fallen several places this year, to number 46 in the list. It is separated from France at 39 by Samoa, Botswana, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, Papua New Guinea and Romania. Those recalling all the abuse hurled at the French for the lack of questions put to Monsieur le Shaggeur Hollande over his recent partner difficulties may allow themselves a smile.

The UK and USA have both slipped in the rankings for the same reason: For the USA, “the hunt for leaks and whistleblowers serves as a warning to those thinking of satisfying a public interest need for information about the imperial prerogatives assumed by the world’s leading power”. The UK “has followed in the US wake, distinguishing itself by its harassment of The Guardian”.

So it was no surprise that the deeply subversive Guardian was the only paper to report on this news, in Roy Greenslade’s blog on Wednesday last. Most of the rest of the Fourth Estate would rather like to have the Guardian harassed, and so keeps schtum. And most is rendered yet less free because of the lack of media plurality – the concentration of titles in very few hands.

When Lord Morris of Aberavon, whose criticism of Sir John Chilcott you report today (Aug 21) was Attoney General in 1988 he chaired a Labour Conference fringe meeting of the Society of Labour Lawyers. My purpose in attending was to raise from the floor the question of the EU’s Corpus Juris plan for a single Napoleonic legal system for the whole of the EU, replacing our adversarial system of which he was then the head.

After I described the plan and pointed out that it would out an end to Magna Carta rights such as habeas corpus, jury trial, lay magistrates and allow (effectively indefinite) detention without even prima facie evidence guilt, the points I raised were heard in silence and then ignored as Lord Morris said “Next question?” My impression was that all of them were already aware of the plan but not concerned by it.

When by coincidence I bumped into Lord Morris at the Membury Services on the M4 and politely tried to raise the subject again, he walked suprisingly rapidly to his car and saying only “Very good!” accelerated away. As far as I am aware he has never spoken publicly on Corpus Juris from that day to this, despite it being widely publicised* and rejected in principle by Parliament shortly afterwards. You will perhaps understand that I am not in the least interested in Lord Morris’ views on anything.

The Real Winner Of Obama’s ‘War On Coal’: George Soros

The real winner of President Barack Obama’s so-called “war on coal” isn’t the EPA, nor is it the natural gas industry. It’s liberal billionaire George Soros.

Last week, Obama’s EPA announced sweeping regulations for U.S. power plants, forcing them to drastically reduce carbon dioxide emissions 32 percent by 2030. The news sent shockwaves through the coal industry, sending stocks tumbling and forcing the industry’s two biggest players to consider bankruptcy filings.

That’s where liberal billionaire Soros steps in. In the days after the Clean Power Plan was announced, Soros bought more than 1 million shares of Peabody Energy and 553,200 shares of Arch Coal — the country’s two biggest publicly-traded coal companies.

Both Peabody and Arch Coal “have seen their market values plummet” due to “competition from cheap natural gas, new environmental regulations and a slowing export market,” according to SNL Financial. Soros was able to pick up these coal stocks on the cheap, in part, due to Obama administration regulations targeting coal-fired power plants and coal mines.

Soros, the 29th richest person in the world, has been a major funder of liberal causes in the country. In 2009, he pledged to spend $1 billion of his own money backing green energy, and he also put funding behind the Climate Policy Initiative think tank, according to The Guardian.

The financial crisis has devastated Greece.
My family, my friends and my neighbours are struggling every day with mass unemployment and homelessness while young people like me have to leave Greece if we want a future.
This is how ordinary Greeks survive the crisis.
Meanwhile, finance giants like Goldman Sachs made close to $450 million Euros off snatching our livelihoods right from under us.
I’ve had enough of big corporations destroying our lives and making money, so I started a petition using SumOfUs’ Community Petitions platform to demand that Goldman Sachs give back the money it took from Greece.
Goldman Sachs made 450 million Euros in profit from crashing the Greek economy. On behalf of my fellow Greek people, I am asking for the corporation to return the profits. Will you sign my petition?
Goldman Sachs’ involvement in the crisis started in 2011 when it created complex financial “swaps” that disguised the extent of our debts.
The goal was to get Greece into the Eurozone and it “worked” — Greece was allowed to join the EU after Goldman was involved. However, this also gave Goldman access to billions of Euros in easy credit that our government was unable to pay back.
Now the people of Greece are paying the price — regular middle-class Greeks likemy family and neighbours have been crushed under the weight of crippling austerity while Goldman Sachs carries on profiteering from debt with impunity.
Will you stand with us? Tell Goldman Sachs to pay back the people of Greece.
It’s sickening that Goldman Sachs earned up to 450 million Euros from the crisis, but this is not surprising behaviour from Goldman Sachs — it’s a world leader in disaster capitalism, with a long history of profiteering from human misery. It inflates bubbles only to profit when they burst. It sells toxic assets and then bets they will crash.From food speculation to global tax evasion, the bank is a symbol of everything that is wrong with capitalism.
“The world’s most powerful investment bank is a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity,” Rolling Stone journalist Matt Taibbi famously wrote, “relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money.”
While Goldman sucks us dry, our schools and hospitals are crumbling, and suicide rates are skyrocketing. 450 million Euros won’t solve all of Greece’s problems, but it will help — and it will go some way to correcting the injustice that allows those who caused the financial crisis to get away scot-free while ordinary people are left to suffer the consequences.
I ask you to stand with the people of Greece and get Goldman Sachs to take responsibility for the Greek crisis.
Goldman Sachs: Return Greece’s money to the people of Greece.

Forgetting my pile of as-yet-to-read books, when Mark Zuckerberg published his books-to-read list – for example here at http://tinyurl.com/npy2smc – I was delighted to see Vaclav Smil being cited as the one author to read under the heading Energy. He has long been one of my heroes on this and many other subjects about which he has written (just check out his publications in Wikipedia here: http://tinyurl.com/q9onoy6 ).

Of special interest is this advice in his ‘Energy at the Crossroads: Global Perspectives and Uncertainties’ [MIT Press 2003]:

“The fundamental reason why carbon dioxide abundance in the atmosphere is critically important to biology is that there is so little of it.
A field of corn growing in full sunlight in the middle of the day uses up all the carbon dioxide within a meter of the ground in about five minutes. If the air were not constantly stirred by convection currents and winds, the corn would not be able to grow.”

Since the first ‘space salad’ was now grown and eaten by the astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS), I wonder what concentration of CO2 was used in the first actual ‘glass house for food’ in Space, when even here on Earth glasshouse plant and food growers put additional CO2 into their greenhouses to avoid their plants withering because of CO2 starvation.

Republican lawmakers are once again questioning the “secret science” used by the EPA to justify some of the costliest Clean Air Act regulations in history.

“The most expensive rules coming out of the EPA rely on secret science,” Sen. Jim Inhofe, an Oklahoma Republican, told FoxNews.com in a statement. “Americans deserve to have access to technical information and data being used to develop EPA rules that significantly impact their daily lives.”

Inhofe’s statement comes after Republicans grilled EPA Chief Administrator Gina McCarthy in a hearing last week over the agency’s use of nonpublic data to calculate the benefits of reducing air pollutants. The EPA “has a responsibility to be open and transparent with the people it serves, and whose money it spends,” Texas Republican Rep. Lamar Smith, House science committee chairman, said during the hearing.

President Barack Obama’s EPA regulatory agenda has imposed nearly $300 billion in costs, according to data from the American Action Forum, mostly from rules being promulgated under the Clean Air Act that rely on non-public scientific data.

To counteract the EPA’s regulatory agenda, Republicans passed the Secret Science Reform Act in the House last March. The bill would prevent the EPA from basing regulations on scientific data that’s not publicly available. So far, the EPA has pushed back against attempts to make its scientific data public.

“The EPA totally supports both transparency as well as a strong peer-reviewed independent science process, but the bill I’m afraid I don’t think will get us there,” McCarthy said during last week’s hearing.

On behalf of legitimate scientists everywhere, I apologize for the bad advice Pope Francis has received about global warming and CO2. I contacted our Papal Nuncio in New York and the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy expressing my concerns, and a delegation of the world’s most esteemed specialists in climate science went to Rome for a scheduled meeting which, according to the press, was blocked by Cardinal Oscar Rodríguez Maradiaga of Honduras (who has been said to be Pope Francis’s closest friend and is commonly referred to as the “Vice Pope”). He recently proclaimed at a news conference in Rome, “The ideology surrounding environmental issues is too tied to a capitalism that doesn’t want to stop ruining the environment because they don’t want to give up their profits.”

The Holy Father’s encyclical will do greatest harm to the very people dearest to him, the poor. It appears that radical environmentalist political ideology has trumped science in this field and given all of science a bad name in the process. This all started from global warming theoretical predictions made by the highly politicized (and now discredited) United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Control (IPCC), predictions that have been thoroughly disproven by experimental data yet have been widely used as a benchmark by alarmist environmental groups. In some circles this brouhaha is also giving the papacy a bad name by associating it with Pope Francis’ and Cardinal Rodríguez Maradiaga’s Marxist controlled home countries of Argentina and Honduras, since environmental extremism and liberalism/socialism are closely linked.

The above mentioned approaches to the pope have been turned away, and a “Galileo-like train wreck” now seems inevitable.

The real substance of the matter boils down to the pope promulgating the elimination of fossil fuel power plants based of the amount of the atmospheric gas CO2 they produce. In this, he is shooting his beloved poor in the foot. CO2 has been conclusively, experimentally, shown to have little if any effect on global warming, and there has no warming for the past 18 years. Further, CO2 has a huge effect on enhancing agriculture, so important to the poor. Lastly, the fossil fuel plants are the only inexpensive way to provide the poor with their immediate and essential energy needs (for heating, electricity, gasoline, and so forth).

I know that Pope Francis had been planning his Eco-Encyclical for a long time and surmise he had no desire to lose any steam by taking the time to work with real climate scientists instead of his people at his Pontifical Academy of Sciences, where there are none. Had he done so, strong environmental statements could still have been made but for the right reasons, not those he adopted (scientists want a good environment too). His social and economic arguments now revolve around a false scientific core, solidly shown to be false by every measurement made.

The Royal Air Force Association recently conducted a survey which showed widespread ignorance about the Battle of Britain. SSAFA, the Soldiers,Sailors and Air Force Association, conducted a similar survey about VE Day which revealed that over half of 18 to 25 year olds did not know that VE Day celebrated Victory in Europe. Thirty eight per cent could not identify Winston Churchill as the prime minister of the time. More worryingly, seven per cent thought it was President Kennedy, seven per cent thought it was Margaret Thatcher and four per cent even believed it was Tony Blair! They had little sense of chronological sequence. Thirty eight per cent believed that the first moon landing, Britain’s entry into the European Union and the fall of the Berlin Wall had all happened before VE Day! A 2004 survey by the BBC showed that half of the 16 to 34 year olds did not know that the Battle of Britain had happened during the Second World War.

Our research found that many corporate lobbyists didn’t even bother signing the EU’s transparency register — leaving the public completely in the dark about their influence on the trade deal.
Even though politicians might try to ignore corporate lobbyists, their constant presence — not to mention fancy dinners — can be hard to resist.
The best way to stop politicians listening to lobbyists is to deliver a louder, stronger, people-powered message opposing TTIP. We’ve done that time and again — targeting politicians at every level, and highlighting the truth about TTIP whenever we get the chance.
But we also need to make sure we chip away at the power of the lobbyists lurking behind closed doors in Brussels, paid big money to convince politicians to ignore their voters in favour of big business’ demands. Shining a light on what they’re up to destroys their power.
We don’t have much time left before the talks finish for this stage of TTIP. And we urgently need to ramp up the pressure: US politicians just voted in favour of making it much easier for Obama to sign them up to big trade deals like TTIP. The EU is increasingly the last line of defence against the trade deal. If we want to prevent this massive corporate power grab, we need to stop lobbyists dominating the TTIP debate.
