WRONG Many businessmen make speeches about the advantages of remaining in the Single Market. It is perfectly possible to remain in the Single Market and leave the EU, as detailed in the FLEXCIT plan, supported by us. Businessmen do not make speeches supporting any other part of EU membership. 2. The referendum is about business. WRONG By remaining in the Single Market there will be no change to jobs, investment or trade. 3. The referendum is about the UK’s trading arrangements. WRONG Remaining in the Single Market means there will be no change to jobs, investment or trade. Deciding future trading arrangements will be done at a future date by democratic discussion in an independent UK. 4. The alternatives are presented by the government as remaining in the EU as it is, or leaving for an unknown future. WRONG There is no option of remaining in the EU as it is. The correct alternatives were put by Jacques Delors in 2012: “If the British cannot support the trend to more integration in Europe, we can remain friends but on a different basis. I could imagine a form such as an European Economic Area or a Free trade Agreement.” 5. The referendum is about whether or not Cameron’s reforms are satisfactory. WRONG The referendum is about ‘remain or leave’ the European Union, not choosing between an ‘unreformed’ and ‘reformed’ European Union. 6. A ‘remain in’ vote proved to be a blank cheque in 1976. The British government took a ‘remain in’ vote as authority to push through numerous further treaties, further integration and loss of independence. A new ‘remain in’ vote is another blank cheque. 7. The referendum is about British influence and sitting at the ‘top table’. WRONG The UK is not, and does not want to be a member of the inner core of the EU either in the eurozone or the Schengen agreement on open borders. This lack of involvement has not diminished British influence because the EU long ceased to be the ‘top table’ and is nowadays more a transmission belt for regulation from global bodies 8. It is safe to remain in the European Union. WRONG Staying in the EU means the UK is involved in the eurozone crisis and the refugee/migration crisis in the rest of the EU. These crises arise from the supranational nature of the EU and can be termed ‘existential’. It also means that the UK voters proclaiming they are not concerned about these crises are willingly giving up their strong opportunity to change matters. The EU institutions will conclude they can move into much faster integration. How Free Is Our Press?

We are frequently told that the freedom of the press is to be compromised by any reform of press regulation. It is also regularly asserted that the press in the UK is a free one. But not everyone subscribes to this point of view, and the people at Reporters Without Borders, in compiling their 2014 Press Freedom Index, have devised a methodology that does not show our press in the best light.

Indeed, the UK has slipped down this year’s listing, from number 30 last year to 33 this time. So who is at the top of the pile? As for the last two years, Finland occupies first place, and the Netherlands and Norway in second and third. There is a preponderance of EU member states and other European countries in the top places, although New Zealand (9) and Iceland (8) are in there too.

So where is the United States? Regrettably, it has fallen several places this year, to number 46 in the list. It is separated from France at 39 by Samoa, Botswana, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, Papua New Guinea and Romania. Those recalling all the abuse hurled at the French for the lack of questions put to Monsieur le Shaggeur Hollande over his recent partner difficulties may allow themselves a smile.

The UK and USA have both slipped in the rankings for the same reason: For the USA, “the hunt for leaks and whistleblowers serves as a warning to those thinking of satisfying a public interest need for information about the imperial prerogatives assumed by the world’s leading power”. The UK “has followed in the US wake, distinguishing itself by its harassment of The Guardian”.

So it was no surprise that the deeply subversive Guardian was the only paper to report on this news, in Roy Greenslade’s blog on Wednesday last. Most of the rest of the Fourth Estate would rather like to have the Guardian harassed, and so keeps schtum. And most is rendered yet less free because of the lack of media plurality – the concentration of titles in very few hands.

When Lord Morris of Aberavon, whose criticism of Sir John Chilcott you report today (Aug 21) was Attoney General in 1988 he chaired a Labour Conference fringe meeting of the Society of Labour Lawyers. My purpose in attending was to raise from the floor the question of the EU’s Corpus Juris plan for a single Napoleonic legal system for the whole of the EU, replacing our adversarial system of which he was then the head.

After I described the plan and pointed out that it would out an end to Magna Carta rights such as habeas corpus, jury trial, lay magistrates and allow (effectively indefinite) detention without even prima facie evidence guilt, the points I raised were heard in silence and then ignored as Lord Morris said “Next question?” My impression was that all of them were already aware of the plan but not concerned by it.

When by coincidence I bumped into Lord Morris at the Membury Services on the M4 and politely tried to raise the subject again, he walked suprisingly rapidly to his car and saying only “Very good!” accelerated away. As far as I am aware he has never spoken publicly on Corpus Juris from that day to this, despite it being widely publicised* and rejected in principle by Parliament shortly afterwards. You will perhaps understand that I am not in the least interested in Lord Morris’ views on anything.

The Real Winner Of Obama’s ‘War On Coal’: George Soros

The real winner of President Barack Obama’s so-called “war on coal” isn’t the EPA, nor is it the natural gas industry. It’s liberal billionaire George Soros.

Last week, Obama’s EPA announced sweeping regulations for U.S. power plants, forcing them to drastically reduce carbon dioxide emissions 32 percent by 2030. The news sent shockwaves through the coal industry, sending stocks tumbling and forcing the industry’s two biggest players to consider bankruptcy filings.

That’s where liberal billionaire Soros steps in. In the days after the Clean Power Plan was announced, Soros bought more than 1 million shares of Peabody Energy and 553,200 shares of Arch Coal — the country’s two biggest publicly-traded coal companies.

Both Peabody and Arch Coal “have seen their market values plummet” due to “competition from cheap natural gas, new environmental regulations and a slowing export market,” according to SNL Financial. Soros was able to pick up these coal stocks on the cheap, in part, due to Obama administration regulations targeting coal-fired power plants and coal mines.

Soros, the 29th richest person in the world, has been a major funder of liberal causes in the country. In 2009, he pledged to spend $1 billion of his own money backing green energy, and he also put funding behind the Climate Policy Initiative think tank, according to The Guardian.

The financial crisis has devastated Greece.
My family, my friends and my neighbours are struggling every day with mass unemployment and homelessness while young people like me have to leave Greece if we want a future.
This is how ordinary Greeks survive the crisis.
Meanwhile, finance giants like Goldman Sachs made close to $450 million Euros off snatching our livelihoods right from under us.
I’ve had enough of big corporations destroying our lives and making money, so I started a petition using SumOfUs’ Community Petitions platform to demand that Goldman Sachs give back the money it took from Greece.
Goldman Sachs made 450 million Euros in profit from crashing the Greek economy. On behalf of my fellow Greek people, I am asking for the corporation to return the profits. Will you sign my petition?
Goldman Sachs’ involvement in the crisis started in 2011 when it created complex financial “swaps” that disguised the extent of our debts.
The goal was to get Greece into the Eurozone and it “worked” — Greece was allowed to join the EU after Goldman was involved. However, this also gave Goldman access to billions of Euros in easy credit that our government was unable to pay back.
Now the people of Greece are paying the price — regular middle-class Greeks likemy family and neighbours have been crushed under the weight of crippling austerity while Goldman Sachs carries on profiteering from debt with impunity.
Will you stand with us? Tell Goldman Sachs to pay back the people of Greece.
It’s sickening that Goldman Sachs earned up to 450 million Euros from the crisis, but this is not surprising behaviour from Goldman Sachs — it’s a world leader in disaster capitalism, with a long history of profiteering from human misery. It inflates bubbles only to profit when they burst. It sells toxic assets and then bets they will crash.From food speculation to global tax evasion, the bank is a symbol of everything that is wrong with capitalism.
“The world’s most powerful investment bank is a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity,” Rolling Stone journalist Matt Taibbi famously wrote, “relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money.”
While Goldman sucks us dry, our schools and hospitals are crumbling, and suicide rates are skyrocketing. 450 million Euros won’t solve all of Greece’s problems, but it will help — and it will go some way to correcting the injustice that allows those who caused the financial crisis to get away scot-free while ordinary people are left to suffer the consequences.
I ask you to stand with the people of Greece and get Goldman Sachs to take responsibility for the Greek crisis.
Goldman Sachs: Return Greece’s money to the people of Greece.

Forgetting my pile of as-yet-to-read books, when Mark Zuckerberg published his books-to-read list – for example here at http://tinyurl.com/npy2smc – I was delighted to see Vaclav Smil being cited as the one author to read under the heading Energy. He has long been one of my heroes on this and many other subjects about which he has written (just check out his publications in Wikipedia here: http://tinyurl.com/q9onoy6 ).

Of special interest is this advice in his ‘Energy at the Crossroads: Global Perspectives and Uncertainties’ [MIT Press 2003]:

“The fundamental reason why carbon dioxide abundance in the atmosphere is critically important to biology is that there is so little of it.
A field of corn growing in full sunlight in the middle of the day uses up all the carbon dioxide within a meter of the ground in about five minutes. If the air were not constantly stirred by convection currents and winds, the corn would not be able to grow.”

Since the first ‘space salad’ was now grown and eaten by the astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS), I wonder what concentration of CO2 was used in the first actual ‘glass house for food’ in Space, when even here on Earth glasshouse plant and food growers put additional CO2 into their greenhouses to avoid their plants withering because of CO2 starvation.
